How to Fold a Wheelchair?
If you or someone you know uses a wheelchair, you might need to know how to fold it up to assist them. Check out our handy guide to folding wheelchairs:
How to fold a wheelchair
First, activate the wheel brake/lock. This looks like a small lever by the front of the wheels. Next, flip the footrests of the wheelchair up. This will keep them out of the way. If the wheelchair has armrests, flip them up too. Now, stand in front of the wheelchair and grip the top side and bottom side of the seat with each hand. Slowly lift the seat. The seat should fold in half and the wheels should move closer together. The chair will collapse inward – and you’re done!
How to unfold a wheelchair
First, place the folded wheelchair on a firm surface and stand in front of it. Activate the wheel lock to allow unfolding. Next, slightly pull the armrests apart. Then, using both hands, push down on both sides of the inside seat. The chair should unfold and ‘lock’ into place. The seat should now be flat with the side seat poles firmly placed in the frame groove. Finally, fold the footrests out – your wheelchair is ready to go! With a bit of practice, you’ll be a professional at wheelchair handling in no time.
